Health Justice is good business

Over the past couple of years, IDEAS xLab has worked  on innovative arts projects that helped us understand health in a new way. This work resulted in a different kind of framework for training artists to support community health.

My Healthy Days is a new national network of arts/culture producers and public health professionals developing best practices toward a movement for putting artists to work as social entrepreneurs advocating for health equity in public policy, developing culturally-aware health systems design and advancing health as a key component of community development strategies.

Health, when combined with creativity, education and compassion, transforms what a person can't do into what a person (or community) can do.

IDEAS xLab's Cultural Blueprint for Health©

My Healthy Days© project home base is Louisville, KY. Despite being a national healthcare industry hub, Louisville has poor health outcomes. The problem is the worst in our economically marginalized communities according to Louisville’s Center for Health Equity.

In communities of color, like Louisville's Smoketown, it is a statistical fact that the average life expectancy is about 9 years less than the average for the city of Louisville. There are roughly 2700 people who live in Smoketown. Just doing some basic math, this means that cumulatively, the families that live here have 24,000 less years than other communities.

24,000 less years to live, work, worship, learn and play.

Family and Social Support. Educational Attainment. Place-based jobs. These have been proven to increase both life expectancy and quality of life.

We believe that My Healthy Days©  is an emergent model for training artists as social entrepreneurs to support the drive to health equity and measurably improved health outcomes in communities across America.
